Oh My God

Tonight I was watching a few series of Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares which is based in the US. Every time something good happened there would be the response "Oh My God". Does this irritate you as it does me as where I am this phrase does not come up all that often. Perhaps it is an American thing.
Oh My God: I could be right.

It is quite a common expression here in the U.S. I was not allowed to use that expression as a child, or around my mother, even as an adult, therefore I am not in the habit of saying it.
Once in awhile it will slip out in the context of "I don't believe it!" The expression only bothers me when someone uses it too often.
And maybe on a deeper level that we should get rid of the phrase, like we should get rid of "bless you" when someone sneezes.

One thing is for certain: The more profoundly baffled you have been in your life, the more open your mind becomes to new ideas.

Its very common in Europe as well. It is one of the ways that religious discourse is embeded in our everyday life - like getting married in a church and `respecting` belief. I kinda stopped saying it a few years ago when I started saying `oh my life` or fucking/bloody hell.

I use it, but I'm trying to wean myself off of "bless you" (at least I don't say, "god bless you") and "oh my god". It's really just a meaningless phrase. When god comes up beyond those two ways or way more often than it should, I definitely get irritated. However, I love saying, "ZOMG".

If it's in the context of sneezing, just say "gesundheit" instead. I want one of those German lean-words that are not war-related to actually succeed ;)

and "oh my god". It's really just a meaningless phrase.

It's meaningless in the sense that lacks specific meaning about gods.

It's not meaningless by itself though, as it expresses an emotion.

When someone yells, "Oh my god!", I know that an emotion of surprise is conveyed. It's not that much of a sentence, more like a word one could as well write "ohmygawd".

It's more related to "youch", "d'oh" and "erm", only the phrase started out as a sentence.

When facepalming I also like to say: Oh. *long pause* My. *long pause* Gawd.

In the past I also liked to utter the Innos' name instead, but since the Gothic games aren't that popular in my circles, no one seems to get it.

Do you mean like say saying it? Like: "Zoooooommmg"?

The generic level of authority (real or not) applied to the term "god" will always put it above "biyatch" in any phrase... Plus, I wouldn't be caught saying "biyatch." I'm not an idiot.
