What do you guys think happens when we die?
I'm not sure if I've already talked about this previously but eh what the hell, it's on my mind. I still can't get passed the tiniest shred of hope I have for there being an afterlife. It seriously scares the shit out of me to think that this is it. This is the one and only chance I get at living etc; Am I the only one that continues to be ignorant and want something else to exist? I just can't come to accept that science can answer everything and that one day all of the unknowns will be figured out. So help me out here. Any other perspectives that will help me accept and come to realize that this is just the way it is, or am I not entirely selfish to think that there might be something else, whether it is a God or just another dimension of some sort....

On another note, I glanced at a thread that talked about newborns dying and whether they went to heaven or hell. Just thinking about that, led me to thinking about kids that died. I'm sure we're all aware of those fucking ten commandments we're supposed to follow and if we break them, it's considered a sin. But what happens if a kid breaks a commandment, what happens to him/her? If a boy wants a lolipop and his mom won't buy it and he just takes it anyway, does he get damned to hell for it, even though he may not truly grasp the concept of right and wrong?

Just a thought."When one person suffers from a delusion it is called insanity; when many people suffer from a delusion it is called religion."
  2.
A talk with this Christian guy I knew:

Him: I don't get it. you're an atheist, but you're so Christian. You've never drunken anything, never smoked anything, don't have sex...
Me: Yeah. I don't have forever in heaven. I have to stay alive as long as I can.

Really I was thinking about death yesterday and how reality is just going to cut off for me and I'll be gone. It literally gave me the chills. The most I hope for in afterlife though is that maybe that last second of life will stretch out into eternity in my perspective. I know what you mean by the lack of hope though, my thread "Beauty and love are not enough" is kind of related to what you just said.

As for the other, I guess hypothetically the kid goes to purgatory. She shows no emotion at all, stares into space like a dead China doll. - Elliott Smith
  3.
Oh right, how could I forget about that :P
And yeah, I get the chills thing to. Sometimes I'll just lay there at night and being in the dark makes me think about being in a coffin, and then I start freaking out.

Yeah..I'm weird."When one person suffers from a delusion it is called insanity; when many people suffer from a delusion it is called religion."

Basically, I would LOVE to be able to live after death, but to our knowledge, its unlikey.

But the way I see it, when we die, we're gone. Its not like we die and go "Shit... What now?" and sit there in blackness for eternity.

    Epicurus describes it perfectly.
"When we exist death is not, and when death exists we are not...

Epicurus also believed (contra Aristotle) that death was not to be feared. When a man dies, he does not feel the pain of death because he no longer is and he therefore feels nothing. Therefore, as Epicurus famously said, "death is nothing to us."

All sensation and consciousness ends with death and therefore in death there is neither pleasure nor pain. The fear of death arises from the false belief that in death there is awareness."

Why fear something that we can not control? I do not think about death much because I am so caught up in how wonderful life is now. if i were to worry about it all the time I would be a miserable person. Misery does not have to be the river of the world but it is because far to many many people are engulfed with the idea of death. How wonderful would it be if everyone thought that there is no life after death. There would be so much less to fight over. John Lennon's "Imagine" says it perfectly but I really like A Perfect Circle's version

I don't really sit here and think of death because I want to, it just overtakes me sometimes. It's like when I'm lying in bed, I let my mind just drift off, I don't try to think about it, it just happens. And I'm quite content with my life, thank you."When one person suffers from a delusion it is called insanity; when many people suffer from a delusion it is called religion."

Not at all. I'm completely the same. It's scary to think about. Really scary. I like to think it'll be less scary later on in life, once I've experienced shit, but what the hell do I know? I remember being absolutely horrified on my ninth birthday because all I could think about was death. I remember staying up all night when I was even younger than that, just thinking about it. I'm not sure if someone said this already, because I was too lazy to read the entire thread, but death with probably be very similar to what it was like before you were born. Every one of us spent millions, billions of years not being alive and after we die we'll spend some more millions, billions of years not being alive. There's nothing to worry about, though. The process itself might not be frightening, but I would hate going to sleep knowing I won't wake up. I'd like to believe I'll fade out of existence blissfully unaware of my imminent expiration, but I fear my last moments may feature the terrifying realization that this is it. No I think it's like if I had a heart attack, or some thing as dramatic, just the thought in my mind of it all being over, that is if there isn't an after life, but since we don't know that, I'd just be panicking about being done with. And who's to say I won't be executed? The fear of death is something biologically programmed into us. When I was near death I wasn't afraid, but was laughing at the worry of others. I guess it made me giddy to see people suffer and saddened by my potential death. The whole being nearly dead thing sucked though, but there was no fear. Then again I'm not wired at all like normal people. In instances where most are afraid and jumpy I'm calm. When most are angry I'm chill or happy. When most are happy I'm irritable. When most are calm I'm anxious.Live Short & Suffer

And....? I just found it hilarious. I had a few moments thinking it would totally suck to die NOW when I hadn't done x and x yet. I think I was more worried bout things that didn't matter. The last thing on my mind was the fact my life was either going to be cut short cause of the whole thing, or I'd just end up dead. I remember calling Vienna at the end of the first night about how I wasn't dead yet and asking her how she was doing. Ha.. You shoulda' heard her.Live Short & Suffer

It is hard for people to contemplate non-existence. "Nothing" is hard to imagine. Most people go to extreme lengths, even as much as hallucinating or projecting false truths on both the explained and unexplained, in order to deal with nothing. This shows some extremes."So, forget Jesus. The stars died so that you could be here today.” - Lawrence krauss

It's just the idea of becoming nothing, perhaps or just the unknown of what happens after. At least that is for me."When one person suffers from a delusion it is called insanity; when many people suffer from a delusion it is called religion."

I used to be a lot more disturbed by the infinite as a child, to be honest. Forever is too much, right? How can heaven be pleasant if it's forever? Wouldn't I get bored? How can you always be happy? And then I went through so much of my life where, I didn't want to die, but openly admitted that if were to die, I'd be content. I didn't care if I woke up the next day or not. Whatever.

And now, just now, from reading this thread, I can finally feel what the fuss is about. I do care whether or not I die. And what is a little disturbing is the thought that I wouldn't exist anymore. I know, I wouldn't be able to feel that nonexistence or be conscious of it, but it still is a little disturbing. Our lives and perceptions revolve around ourselves. When you take yourself out of the equation... it's hard to imagine. I don't know, it used to be so easy for me. Now I just keep thinking: I wouldn't exist, I wouldn't exist.

Bah, that's why I think reincarnation is the most pleasant idea of all the afterlives. Heaven and hell seem like they would lose their effectiveness in eternity. Ceasing to exist isn't really a fun option. But waking up a different person, that's nice. Life is nice.Standing in the sun with my heart in my hand
