I guess that nobody even noticed I was gone but nvm. I had a great time in Australia and I'm back in Austria and my flat's freezing. It's 15°C in here and the heating is slow. My money basically ran out in Down Under and for reasons unknown to me I have a 300 Euro phone bill. (I used the Australian sim card of a friend so I didn't even use my phone?????)

Well, seeing as MS and Yahoo are joining forces to fight them, I would venture that MS would buy Yahoo before Google would buy either of them.

I'm pro-Google in the sense that I love the things they do in the spirit of net neutrality as well as "looking out for the little guy"; however, they are also a wolf in sheep's clothing as they collect all of your information over years and years and sell it via their advertisement system. Luckily it's anonymous, but still... Google is more of a monopoly than MS ever was thought to be... And the government isn't stepping in very hard because of the failure they had against MS (which, ironically subsequently fucked up all of the tech stocks and caused the .Com bomb sooner than it should have occurred).Death is life's way of telling you that you've been fired.

It's actually true though. When I was on my old computer, I only used IE. I have always used AVG free. After every month, I make virus checks. With IE, I had about 100 viruses/threats per month. With FF, I have roughly 10. Now I don't know a hell of a lot about computers or programs and stuff but that is a hint for me: FF is better. Then consider all the addon's...

And with all its extension, you can make it optimal, you "just" have to invest a little effort. There is a handful of must-haves (NoScript, OptimizeGoogle, TabMixPlus, DownThemAll, Download Statusbar and as I recently posted Lazarus -- an extension I've been wishing for ages) and a load of useful ones considering your taste.

And of course I must change in about:config the image.animation_mode from "true" to "once".

Everytime I surf the internet on different PCs I get astounded how people can actually read sites that are drowining in flash- oder gif-ads. (I have nothing against ads, I have something against them being so goddamn annoying. It's why I really like Google TextAds.)

I was an Opera-use since its version 4 because I loved its tabbing browsing functionality. I was pretty happy until Firefox 1.0 came out. I've checked it out, changed, and never looked back up until this very day.

Opera was indeed supposed to be payed for, but only to remove the ad-bar. IIANM in 2005 Opera was turned into Freeware.

Somone really coded an Ad-bar-extension for Firefox so you can get that feeling back: Adbar for Firefox. I actually had in one a few times when I was feeling nostalgic ;-)

Nevermind the fact that Google are the ones who payed and still pay Mozilla a shitload of money (we are talking about millions of dollars here) in order to weaken Microsoft's IE and to support open standards, they don't really care for the success of Chrome. Chrome was more like a techdemo. Google isn't interessted in having the most dominant browser but it is interessted in Open Standards and fast JavaScript-engines.

Yes. It was a pay-for application up until version 8 (which they celebrated with free keys for anyone who wanted them). The "free" version is ad supported, actually.

Posted By: InfernoWait, WHAT? Are you making this shit up? I DL her, from the official site. For Free.

Safari was built for the Apple platform. No, I am not "making this shit up." To get "optimum performance" you must be running on the Apple platform. Thus... Thousands of dollars. ;)

Posted By: InfernoAnyway, I don't like IE because
    1) Unsafe.
    2) Not many gadgets.
    3) Crap layout.

FF isn't the optimum, but it's close.

IE is only unsafe if you let it be, just like any other browser. The unfortunate part is that most people are stupid and don't run their Windows Update frequently and all of these "security holes" are still in their system. Just like a PC, if you don't run your automatic updates on your Mac it'll be ridden with security holes.

As for gadgets, there are TONS of IE addons as of IE7. There are no excuses when it comes to "well, there aren't any add-ons that do XXX" because chances are if you looked at the IE add-on marketplace there is one. Shit, they even had an add-on that allowed tabbing function before tabs were built into the browser.

Crap layout? What exactly are you referring to? To the layout of the software or the way things are displayed? I don't see how ANY browser has a "crap layout" unless everything is backwards... And if you look at the bulk of the browsers out now (including all of the ones you listed) you'll see that the majority of them take pages out of the old IE book (meaning out of the IE interface before IE used tabs, which was one excellent idea that Firefox had over IE from the beginning). How many browsers call their start page their "home page" and have a little house icon? ;) Or perhaps a wrench instead of a cog? No similarities there, either, right? :) Or the recycle symbol (or some manifestation of it) for the refresh/reload button?

Bottom line is that all of the browsers suit certain groups of people. :) I agree with this. I just don't think IE is at the bottom of the heap.Death is life's way of telling you that you've been fired.

I agree with Fackel, though I would still venture that with the same extensions, Chrome is the superior browser merely based off of function (it's a HELL of a lot faster now that Firefox has become bloated with useless add-ons as well as allowing add-ons that "phone home" whenever they want).Death is life's way of telling you that you've been fired.

Faster in what respect? Starting time? Firefox is always running on my machines, so I don't care. I have a close-to-tray-addon installed :) Somehow I have to fill my 8GB of RAM ;)

    Siteload times?

I don't care if Chrome renders 4ms faster, I care for the functionality my browser gives me. With Chrome I would have to start persoanlizing all over again, and I just don't see any use for me.

Posted By: Akutaallowing add-ons that "phone home"

It's true that addons are a potential back-door for malware, and I am truly astounded that there wasn't a big succesful scam using it. And I have to wonder what is per se bad in allowing addons to phone home? It's necessary to allow services like Weave to work. The fear of death arises from the false belief that in death there is awareness.

It's ok, fanboy. ;) You can like whichever you want. I couldn't care less. But to answer your question(s). Yes. Both application and site load times are faster. And it's not a matter of milliseconds.

There ARE big, successful scams using add-ons. They're called toolbars, and Firefox has 'em too... Which is a problem. As for the "phoning home" being bad or not, I wasn't eluding to the fact that allowing add-ons to do this is bad in and of itself, but the fact that the user has literally ZERO control over it if the application developer (i.e the guy who wrote the add-on) doesn't want them to. Had they thought a bit more thoroughly, they would have made it so the only way they could access something externally was to go through a special API which would allow the user to control which add-ons had access and which do not... And since it's an add-on accessing the internet (and not a separate application from the browser), you can't "block" said add-ons because it would block the browser.Death is life's way of telling you that you've been fired.
