No that would be multiplying zero by something, not the same thing as dividing something by zero.

Ah, there I think you are wrong.

Here is my justification for dividing by zero bresulting in infinity:

Imagine a line. It can be of any length. This line is a number line. Let's just say it is 1 length. A solid, continuous line that represents the numerical value of 1. Now imagine zero in this way. If you think correctly, what you should imagine is a point - something that does not extend for any distance in any direction. Since this point has no length and occupies no distance whatsoever, you can fit an unlimited number of these points along the number line, no matter how long the number line is. In this way, if you divide a number up into zero-dimensional points (ie. divide it by zero), you will get an infinite number of them.

Hence, dividing by zero gets you infinity.

Did you not take algebra 2? It's undefined because zero wouldn't even be a point. It would be nothing. There's an infinite amount of points in between 1 and 2, but there's an undefined amount of nothings in between them."The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts." ~ Bertrand Russell

It looks to me like inifiti and undefined are the same thing. You can indeed fit an infinite amount of nothing into any amount of something. Infact, the only thing that can logically be infinite is literally nothing.

So yeah, I conclude with my huge lack of expertise that infiniti and undefined are the same.

    Q.E.D.

I see why you say this but division is only short hand notation for multiplication. And it depends on what you mean by division, too.

    For example

    10/2 = 5 means that 2*5 = 10

    and

    18/3 = 6 means that 6*3 = 18

    but

    20/0 = infinity means that 0*infinity = 20 ....(what!?)

The problem here is that infinity cannot be treated as a number (which was what you did). So, not only your proof is invalid, you proof lacks the definition of infinity.

However, what is lurking here is the concept of a limit; so new notation is required to make some since of this.

We know that we can't simply divide by zero (where the number being divided is nonzero), as I provided a counter example to your claim.

However, you have the idea almost right.

Suppose I have a nonzero number, call it "a." We can think "a" as a pie that we like to eat or an apple, etc, etc.

Suppose we divide this "a" by a certian number, say "n"

So, we have a percentage or portion, "a/n"

Clearly, as n gets large, a/n gets really small, right? if we divide the pie up into more pieces, we get smaller pieces. However, if we let "n" become really small,
a/n gets large. Let's assume that "n" is positive for simplicity.

    so,

The limit as n approaches zero from the right is positive infinity. There's a difference between the actual value of "a/n" and what it approaches.
For if we assume that a/0 = infinity, it leads to contradictions (if not treated carefully).

so, be careful, there. There is no morality when one's motives are driven by reward and punishment.

Matt, if what you say is true, then

    0*infinity = 1
    and
    0*infinity = 2
    and
    0*infinity = sqrt(3)
    and
    etc, etc,...

    which means that 1 = 2 = sqrt(3); a contradiction.
